T-Mobile Motorola CLIQ XT Stuck on Android 1.5 Forever

It’s a sad day for owners of T-Mobile’s Motorola CLIQ XT. According to Motorola’s support forums, they’ve been working on getting Android 2.1 running on the aging smartphone, but they have finally thrown in the towel.

“After comprehensive testing of the Android 2.1 upgrade for the CLIQ XT, we have concluded that this device will remain on Android 1.5. We realize many of you were anxiously awaiting this upgrade, but we aim to deliver software upgrades only when it will provide a better customer experience. (…) Some of you will wonder why we didn’t announce this sooner. For one, we didn’t learn about this all that long ago. Then, it has taken some time to coordinate with T-Mobile and alert our call center agents and others of the decision.”

While disappointing, the news isn’t entirely surprising. We had suspected that an update to Android 1.6 might be a possibility, but not any more. What can CLIQ XT owners do now? If you don’t mind risking turning your phone into a brick, there are custom ROMs available that you might want to look into, but you may be better severed upgrading to another device. For what it’s worth, HTC has been pretty good about pushing updates to their devices.
