Sony Ericsson Xperia Updates: Pinch Zoom for X10, ANT+ Support
The eagerly-awaited pinch-to-zoom update for Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 finally started to head out to customers in Japan a couple weeks ago, and now SE reports that the feature is on its way to the rest of you X10 owners. Other Xperia models from last year, including the X8, are getting their own updates, including the addition of support for the ANT+ wireless protocol.
The X10 updates are going out OTA first, starting this week. The pinch-to-zoom functionality that SE’s engineers have hacked into the not-quite-compatible touchscreen aren’t going to give you the kind of multi-touch experience as you’d get on an iPhone, but will provide a basic way to quickly zoom in and out of certain apps. SE has said that the feature will definitely work for web browsing, and while using Google Maps, with the option for other apps to support it as well.
In addition to pinch-to-zoom, the X10 update adds some basic video editing support and an option to auto-transcode videos for MMS transmission.
The ANT+ update for the X8 and the Xperia minis allows the phones to communicate with wireless sensors supporting the protocol. These are mostly sports-related, including things like heart monitors and bicycle speed sensors. Apps taking advantage of the ANT+ support can use this data to provide real-time fitness updates, or catalog your workouts to provide a record of your accomplishments. SE expects these updates to start going out next week.
