iOS 4.3 To Kill The Home Button Over Multi-Touch Gestures?

Well iOS 4.3 is out, and rumors have it that there’s lots more with this release than just a couple of minor adjustments to the OS and the Personal HotSpot feature.

So far, it has just been discovered that the iPad will bring multi-touch gestures that will allow you to move within applications and out of them. Surely the iPad is not our cup of tea on Smartphone land, but other sources have even found some code that now confirms that these multi-touch gestures will also make it to the iPhone. We’ll most probably not get four and five finger gestures like the ones found on the iPad, but what ever they come up with, I’ll have to admit will be much better than double tapping a button at the bottom. If you own one of the current generation Macs with the multi-touch glass track pad, then you know what I’m talking about.

What we’ll most probably not get on future iPhone releases, if all these changes work, is a Home button. Not that I’m a big fan of it or hate it, but I do feel that well calibrated gestures will do a better job in saving us work from switching between apps or even running simple tasks, than just one button. Gestures are all controlled by software and can be enhanced at any time, as opposed to a hardware button where things simply can’t change after it’s shipped.

Bottom line, if all this rumor becomes a reality, then you should expect a much smoother iOS, and hey, why not an even smaller and lighter iPhone in June if they ever remove the button and crop the extra space it needed in the past. Only time will tell.
