Best Buy Freezes Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro Sales [Update]

While today is the day to buy your first Samsung Nexus S Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread powered smartphone, Best Buy appears to be freezing the sales on the Verizon Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro handsets.

According to a screenshot (above), Verizon is restricting activations for the Droid 2 Global and the Droid Pro — both released on November 9 — and directs stores to pull the mocks as well as quarantine the units existing on stock till further notice. We’re not sure why Verizon is pulling this move — maybe there’s an issue with the devices that might make them explode or they might be back running Gingerbread — but for sure, Frozen Yogurt powered Frozen Droids will only benefit T-Mobile’s Samsung Nexus S today. Any thoughts?

Update: Engadget reports that the possible apple of discord between Verizon and Best Buy is actually represented by the low handset prices the retailer applied for both smartphones. Going for $100 for the Droid 2 Global and $50 for the Droid Pro — both on contract — the price seems to be violating an alleged agreement between the two as Best Buy hammers Verizon’s own store prices.

Update 2: Verizon told PhoneScoop that this is definitely not a device-wide recall, saying that “We can’t speak for Best Buy, but both the Droid Pro or the Droid 2 Global are popular sellers. How they manage their inventory is their business but there are no recalls on those devices.” So there you have it: seems like this really is a Best Buy-exclusive issue.
