Google Nexus S Primed for TV Ad Stardom?

While anyone who keeps up with the latest smartphone news (and honestly, who wouldn’t?) would have no problem whatsoever recognizing the name “Nexus S”, Joe-phone-buyer may be left scratching his head. A Google-produced advertisement for the new handset may be able to change that, if the video ends up making its way to television.

The airwaves are home to plenty of ads for smartphones, dominated by Droids, iPhones, and the first wave of 4G devices. In the past, Google hasn’t joined in with the rest, which may have had more than a little to do with the less-than-stellar sales the Nexus One saw. Is a Nexus S campaign now planned to see if getting into the public eye is what the phone needs to succeed?

Until we see otherwise, we’re guessing this clip is going to stay constrained to the internet. That doesn’t mean you won’t see it pop up as part of Google’s campaign for the Nexus S, but it’s hard to see how the ad would appeal to a broader television audience. Promoting the handset as “unlocked” or on “Gingerbread” isn’t going to be much use to someone not already a bit into smartphones. If the Nexus S does end up becoming a TV star, this doesn’t seem like the vehicle Google would choose.
