Android 2.3 Gingerbread Likely Launching Tomorrow

Android founder Andy Rubin is likely to launch the platform’s next iteration, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, at Monday’s D: Dive Into Mobile conference in San Francisco. For those of you keeping score, this is the fourth time we’ve reported on an impending launch, starting exactly a month ago with a “trusted source” tipping the SDK release for November 11th. Well now the evidence is a bit more concrete: Notion Ink, developer of an upcoming Android-powered tablet, has revealed in a blog post that “6th December is another big day for Android and you will find out how fast Notion Ink can work.” As if this alone was not highly suggestive of a Monday announcement, the company follows up with the parenthetical remark that its dual-mode interface, known as Eden, “is extremely compatible” with 2.3.”

Of course the last time we suspected an imminent announcement, prior to November 15th’s Web 2.0 Summit, Google CEO Eric Schmidt took the stage to tease the audience with a Gingerbread-powered Samsung Nexus S; besides promising a full reveal in the upcoming weeks, however, Schmidt did not share many details beyond what we already knew. In fact, the best look we’ve gotten at the upgraded operating system — said to bring better gaming capabilities, support for higher resolutions, contactless payment functionality, and an improved Market payment architecture, among other features — came from an official Google Hong Kong demo video (embedded below) which unintentionally showed off the user interface (before being quickly pulled by the company).

The conference, founded by Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher of the Wall Street Journal, runs for two days, and although the speaking schedule is not revealed beforehand, previous reports placed Rubin in a Monday timeslot. We’ll know more tomorrow morning after the event handbook is distributed to on-site attendees.
