Select Group of Droid Owners To Get Android 2.2.1 Update?

A select group of Motorola Droid owners on Verizon will receive an official ROM update within the next 24 hours that will likely bump their platform version number to Android 2.2.1 as the update is build FRG830.

What will the update bring?

– Updated Twitter® application with new authentication support

– Updated Amazon widget

– Updated News & Weather widget

– Improvements to Exchange ActiveSync®:

— Handles server-side inactivity timeouts of 34 minutes

or greater

— Continues to sync emails after a policy refresh

— Support for Exchange 2010 connections

– Added new Gmail® user interface

Those that have joined the Motorola Feedback Network — to which this update will be first pushed out — received the following email:

“Over the next 24 hours, barring last-minute changes, we will begin to distribute the latest Droid software to a select group of owners, and you should expect to be among them.* As a Motorola Feedback Network member, you are key to this test. Some of the owners are chosen at random and as a result, we won’t get feedback from them. But we’re counting on you and other members to provide us with a quick and accurate assessment of this update. After this pre-launch release, we’ll observe for a few days to make sure all is well, before releasing to all owners”.

If you’re not part of the group, don’t worry, you’ll receive the update too in a couple of days given the select group doesn’t find anything big that would affect the roll-out. It’s not Gingerbread, but it’s an improvement!
