Google Updates Sky Map for Android, Adds Time Travel

Google sure does like maps! From Google Maps, to Navigation, to Google Earth, Google’s got you covered. But they didn’t stop there! Google has even charted the Moon, Mars, and even the heavens. Mars and the Moon don’t have Android apps (yet?), but Google Sky Map has been around for a while. Today it got an update (which you’ll have to apply manually), bringing it to version 1.6.

What’s so cool about this release? To quote from the Android Market, new features include Time Travel an Multi-Touch.

Multi-touch is a welcome addition, bringing gestures to “easily zoom in & out or rotate the display using just two fingers”, of course you’ll need a device that supports multi-touch input.

Time travel? Seriously? Google has finally solved the riddle of time travel? Well, not exactly. What they did figure out was how to fast-forward and rewind the sky, and now lets you “view the sky as it looked in the past or as it will look in the future. You can also speed up time to watch events like eclipses and conjunctions.”

Google Sky Map is available free in the Android Market.
