Apple Pulls Slide-On Cases From Stores Due To Glassgate?
So as it stands, reports have Apple pulling Slide-On cases from their stores because it seems you can easily scratch the iPhone 4’s back if a little dirt gets trapped inside the case before sliding the phone in. This includes all cases that require your phone to slide in, and yeah, the Mophie Juice Pack is also sadly on the list.
Call it gorilla glass, elephant glass, hippopotamus glass, or whatever you want, it’s still glass. Surely it’s not easy to scratch a fine piece of glass, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. My experience with the first generation iPod Touch had me convinced the glass was non-scratchable until I saw that it’s a common deal to see iPhone’s scratched by some of my female friends due to the proximity of sharp earrings while on a phone call. So yeah, surely we are much better off now than we were with the plastic iPhone 3G and 3GS, but if you design a phone to be fully constructed by glass, the probability of it becoming a scratch magnet still exist.
No word on when this ban will end, but the report does state that Apple is testing all these slide-on cases at a secret location before giving them the “sure, go ahead” stamp of acceptance. Our advice for now is that you get a good tiny paint brush and a cloth and dust everything you can away from your current case. And whatever you do, stay away from beach sand!
