Dell Venue Pro Suffering From Protected WiFi Bug? [Update]

The Dell Venue Pro is not even fully out yet and it’s already drawing some negative feedbacks. First of all, the device was long awaited by potential customers and when the November 8 date arrived, the Venue Pro was a “rara avis” with Microsoft stores that had a couple of units on stock which sold out fast. Then there was the disappointment of apparently no user accessible microSD card so it looks like you won’t be able to upgrade the memory on the handsets (at least not the easy way).

Latest negative on the Dell Venue Pro is an alleged WiFi bug; users who got lucky enough to get their hands on the handset reported that the Venue Pro is having a hard time connecting to protected WiFi networks – like it was not enough that Windows Phone 7 is unable to connect to hidden WiFi networks. Using the WiFi utility generates an error: “your phone couldn’t reach the Wi-Fi network” which seems to disappear when the device connects to an unprotected network. We don’t believe the WPA authentication issue users report on the handset is hardware related (which needs to comply with certain specifications in order to be approved) but rather a poor driver or software implementation which could be easily fixed by a software update. Until Dell makes an official statement, we’re left with initial user feedback and speculation and according to those, there’s a WiFi bug with the Dell Venue Pro.

Do you own a Venue Pro? Do you have problems while trying to connect to a protected WiFi network?

Update: Looks like Dell accidentally shipped out engineering devices to Microsoft stores and those who bought the Venue Pro that had the WiFi issues due to the engineering device instead of the retail one, were offered an in-store exchange to another (non Dell) handset.
