BlackBerry OS 6 Leaked for Bold 9700
BlackBerry operating system leaks are nothing unique — they happen nearly every day, in fact — but most are just minor version bumps, i.e. 18.104.22.168 to 22.214.171.124. But when RIM’s flagship BlackBerry Bold 9700 gets an early taste of OS 6, well, that’s something worth reporting. We’d heard back in November that this optical trackpad-equipped candybar handset was in the process of undergoing OS 6 testing on T-Mobile (it’s also sold by AT&T), but as was the case back then, no official timetable has been given for the official rollout.
Besides tweaking the UI and simplifying initial setup, OS 6 brings several welcome features to the platform, including universal search, a client which unifies RSS feeds and social network updates, and perhaps most importantly, a modern, standards-compliant web browser from subsidiary Torch Mobile. The operating system has, however, received some criticism for not matching the capabilities of other platforms such as iOS and Android. RIM’s BlackBerry Torch 9800 and Style 9670 were the first two devices to ship with OS 6, and a number of other late model handsets should also see an upgrade.
