HP Will Sell Unlocked GSM Palm Pre 2 Directly
HP will offer an unlocked GSM version of the Palm Pre 2 in the coming months to US consumers, according to an interview with Product Manager Tim Pettitt. The company had originally announced its intention to sell such a device to webOS developers, but this is the first time we’ve heard that it would also be available to the general public. Pettitt made his remarks to Mark Guim TV — remaining mum on any pricing information — in a video which you’ll find embedded below.
There have already been indications that AT&T would be joining Verizon in carrying the 1GHz, Gorilla Glass-equipped upgrade: first AT&T showed up as a named carrier in some buried HTML code on the Palm Canada site, and then we saw compelling evidence that Rogers would be the Canadian network rolling the device out — which happens to use the same 3G bands as AT&T in the US, meaning that a compatible device is already being manufactured. This would not be the first time Palm devices have been sold unlocked directly from the company, as the same sales channel was used with several of its Treo models dating back to the 650.
