GM, OnStar Apps Offer Vehicle Diagnostics, Remote Control
GM has announced the release of its suite of apps for controlling, locating, and viewing diagnostic information about 2011 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles. Available for iPhone and Android devices, the myChevrolet software allows owners to perform functions like saving parking spot locations on a map, keep track of remaining time on a parking meter, or request roadside assistance with minimal effort. Additionally, the apps include vehicle-specific information usually found in the owners manual, including an interactive explanation of all warning lights and indicators.
The real fun comes for OnStar subscribers by way of the OnStar MyLink App, which leverages the service’s cellular connection with a vehicle to enable remote operations such as locking/unlocking, triggering the horn, and even starting the engine. And when they say remote, they mean it: since no line of sight is required, these functions can be performed literally miles away from the vehicle. Finally, the OnStar app delivers near-real-time diagnostic information like fuel and oil levels, tire pressure, and various metrics including fuel efficiency and extrapolated range.
All of the apps are free for owners of compatible vehicles, and available immediately in either the App Store or Android Market.
