Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, speaking at the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo in Orlando, Fla., stated that he wished Windows Phone 7 could have been released twelve months earlier. He also said that Microsoft has a lot of work to do to get back in the mobile game, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Windows Phone 7 was officially released in Europe today. It has received a lot of very positive reviews. Most of them point out how fluid and fresh the operating system is and how you can get to important information with just a brief glance. Within those positive reviews, most point out the lack of Copy/Paste and multitasking as major omissions.

It must be taken into account that this is a version 1.0 OS. It will continue to improve and pick up those missing features. The question remains, is there room for another mobile OS? Does Microsoft have the time to implement these necessary missing features?

The smartphone space is expanding rapidly; there are still many feature phone users that will convert to a smartphone. This is an opportunity for Microsoft to attract new users but it has to continue the momentum that is slowly building.

Keep the updates coming, add in new exciting features and Microsoft stands a good chance of taking some market share back from Apple, Google and others. If on the other hand Microsoft sits on its laurels, it could be too late.
