T-Mobile On G2 WiFi Calling, Tethering: ‘We’re Working On It’

T-Mobile would neither confirm nor deny the legitimacy of an apparent over-the-air update, pushed to a handful of HTC G2 devices which brings both WiFi calling as well as tethering capability. Instead, the company issued a brief statement acknowledging the demand for such functionality (“T-Mobile

knows these features are important to consumers…) and offering customers good hope that a large scale rollout is indeed coming (“…and we’re working to deliver them to G2 users in the future”).

However, the statement also made it very clear that an update is far from imminent: “Wi-Fi Calling and tethering Wi-Fi sharing are not currently supported on the T-Mobile G2…we have nothing further to announce at this time.”

One interesting tidbit of information we learned from Android Police is that this new implementation of WiFi calling on Android is apparently not the same as UMA, in that calls cannot reportedly hop between WLAN and cellular networks. Which if true, would be a bit of a downer, since that capability really made UMA quite attractive; start your call at home, and continue it on your commute without wasting minutes.
