eBay, has launched a new and improved version of its mobile website, now fully optimized for smartphone users and built in association with cross-platform mobile solutions provider Netbiscuits. The revamped site enables users to browse categories, save and refine searches, sort results by price, time and/or location, and uncover related auctions or other items listed by the same seller.

Upgrades include auto-complete for search queries, expandable swiping galleries for gallery and item photos and a floating menu bar that keeps controls onscreen as you scroll through pages.

Available at launch only for iPhone users; a version is on its way for Android and in 2011 this will be expanded to more than 1000 unique devices.

The mobile website is accessible via your mobile phones browser and is not to be confused with the various applications that are already available for iPhone, Android and Blackberry smartphone platforms.

eBay said that the relaunched mobile website will work in tandem with its existing smartphone applications. “When discussing traffic numbers on a device basis, I think it’s important to note that we’ve actively diverted millions of users from our mobile website m.ebay.com to our iPhone, Android and BlackBerry apps,” said eBay director of platform business solutions and mobile engineering Han-Shen Yuan in a statement. “However, despite us proactively diverting traffic, mobile web revenue growth is increasing at the same pace as our mobile app business. Therefore, it is important to have a mobile strategy that includes both mobile sites and apps.”

Looking at the new site, it is far easier on the eye and looks a lot less cluttered than the previous version. Navigation is greatly improved with the auto-complete and swiping galleries.

The images below show the differences between the old and new versions, the first picture is taken from the old version still available from the UK mobile site and the second picture is from the US mobile site with the new code.
