The Way Windows Phone 7 Will Copy/Paste

There’s been a lot of buzz and aversion around Microsoft’s plans to exclude Copy/Paste functionality from their Windows Phone 7 platform as everybody and their neighbor, regardless if they even used the feature or not, wanted to have it now more than ever with iOS implementing it as of version 3.0.

Copy/Paste functionality was something that, according to Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President Windows Phone Program Management, was not initially on their development schedule as Windows Phone 7 does a great job with the “smart links” feature which recognizes hyperlinks so you can open them in the browser, phone numbers which you can dial or addresses that you can look up. “We try to anticipate what the user wants so copy and paste isn’t necessary” said Todd Brix, Windows Phone Executive back at the MIX conference in March. Yesterday, at the Microsoft Press Conference, Joe Belfiore announced that Copy/Paste functionality will be added to Windows Phone 7 early 2011.

If, at the moment, Windows Phone 7 lets users highlight a specific word without expanding the selection, the upcoming feature to be added will be built on the platform’s ability to recognize individual words, as part of the text correction functionality of Windows Phone 7. Starting from there, users will be able to contract or expand the selection and a separate Paste icon will make its appearance allowing users to paste text, but the look is not yet final.

If Microsoft will continue to listen to the voices of users and the community to constantly improve Windows Phone 7 by releasing system updates that improve or add functionalities, issue fixes or sort out bugs, they will have themselves a constantly growing happy customer pool.
