Limera1n Tool Said to Jailbreak iOS 4.1; GeoHot Creator?

Famed iPhone hacker George Holtz, a.k.a. GeoHot, has released an alleged universal jailbreaking tool called limera1n that will supposedly work on any Apple device running iOS 4.0 and up (save for the iPod touch 2G). This of course means that GeoHot has apparently succeeded in jailbreaking iOS 4.1, a feat that numerous hacking teams have been attempting to accomplish since its release. Limera1n is reportedly both untethered and unpatchable, but this latter quality comes at the price of simplicity, meaning that this is no longer a one-click affair.

Making the release — which is currently Windows only, and in Beta version 4 — even more dramatic is the fact that the Chronic Dev Team had scheduled tomorrow for the release of their own tool, GreenPois0n. Now the team will apparently implement GeoHot’s limera1n patch into their tool, so that once Apple breaks its functionality, GreenPois0n’s original exploit, Shatter, can be used to begin the cycle anew. By having two separate jailbreaking tools in the wild at once, Apple is given the advantage of killing both with a single update.

The download link for limera1n can be found below, but you’d be best to read Engadget’s experience with the process before you proceed, as they apparently experienced some problems of the missing icon variety. So, you know, make sure you’re all backed up and what not before you attempt such a feat.
