New webOS Phones ‘Coming Early Next Year,’ Says HP

Hewlett-Packard will definitely be releasing webOS-powered smartphones in the beginning of 2011, according to a high-ranking HP executive. “You will see us coming early next year with new phones,” company Senior Vice President Eric Cador unequivocally told a conference audience in Barcelona. Cador went on to say that picking up Palm’s intellectual property, including webOS, was “extremely fundamental” in the recent acquisition, according to Reuters.

With the company very publicly working on the second major version of its homegrown operating system, webOS 2.0, and with Palm itself having recently snagged about 200 HP employees for various job functions, it has been fairly obvious that the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus would not be the last hardware we’d see from the venerable PDA/smartphone manufacturer. The fact that HP CTO Phil McKinney was photographed with a blacked-out handset made the likelihood of a new phone even higher. We’ve already heard that one of these devices is a high-resolution, touchscreen slate called the Mansion, and we’re pretty sure that the rumor mill will only kick into higher gear now that actual products have been confirmed.
