Apple Journo Gruber on Windows Phone 7: ‘Really Impressed’

There’s nothing quite like vocal admiration from a general of the opposing army, and Apple journalist John Gruber’s almost-gushing initial impressions of Windows Phone 7 seems to be just that caliber of high praise. Gruber, the one-man machine behind eight-year-old Daring Fireball, apparently got a few minutes of face time (no pun intended) with a Windows Phone 7 device at a cocktail party following the Web 2.0 Expo in New York City, and reported back very enthusiastically on his Talk Show podcast.

Specifically, Gruber mentioned that the operating system was “really nice.” “I was really impressed,” he said. He noted that the development unit he played with was “lighter than an iPhone 4, in a good way;” he also felt that scrolling and other UI activities had “iPhone-caliber latency,” which is to say, almost none. Gruber described the soft keyboard as “fantastic,” and the browser as “good.” He clearly seemed to prefer his experience over using an Android phone, whose keyboard, latency, and fragmentation he all criticized.

Overall, Gruber revealed that his “first impressions (were) very, very favorable.”
