Nokia N8 Begins Shipping, But US Customers Will Wait

Nokia has begun shipping its highly-anticipated N8 smartphone to customers who have pre-ordered — this was apparently the most popular pre-release device in Nokia history — although US buyers will have to wait until the end of October to receive their Symbian^3-powered “multimedia computers.” With this September 30th launch, Nokia has kept its promise to European customers (confirming that earlier rumors of a delay were unfounded), but has not been so polite to interested stateside parties, who were once given a 9/30 ship date as well.

As the company’s flagship device, the $549 N8 packs a lot of high-end features, most significantly its 12-megapixel Carl Zeiss lens — a sensor that will probably only get bested in the megapixel race when Altek launches its 14-megapixel Leo next year. Other nice touches include an AMOLED display (rather rare these days), 16GB of expandable storage, and a penta-band HSPA radio for worldwide 3G action.
