Verizon Planning Tiered Data Pricing, CEO Still Mum on iPhone

Verizon Wireless is planning to introduce its own tiered pricing model for data, as soon as four to six months down the line, according to Verizon Communications CEO Ivan Seidenberg. Like rivals Sprint and T-Mobile, Verizon currently offers so-called unlimited plans (although all providers reportedly cap exceptionally heavy users), but now looks as if it will follow AT&T down the path of limited data plans. AT&T earlier this year eliminated its $30 all-you-can-eat plan — save for those users grandfathered in — in place of the $15 monthly DataPlus and $25 monthly DataPro options which give you 200MB or 2GB, respectively.

What’s not totally clear is if Seidenberg is referring to capping the network’s current 3G data plans or future 4G plans during its LTE rollout; The Wall Street Journal quoted him as saying that “the introduction of new products and services would allow Verizon Wireless to introduce a tiered pricing structure,” and one of those services could certainly be 4G.

Perhaps just as interesting were Seidenberg’s comments on Apple’s iPhone — perhaps one of the “new products” he mentioned? — which seemed at times both cocky and deferrential. On the one hand he reportedly argued that “at some point, Apple will get with the program,” while later noting that “we would love to carry , but we have to earn it.” Predictably, Seidenberg refused to address the growing speculation that the iPhone 4 will hit Verizon as early as next January, saying simply that “I can’t speak for Apple.”
