Adobe Air for Android Available in the Coming Weeks
First it was Flash, now it’s Air that’s coming to an Android near you. That much we know, courtesy of some comments that Adobe made at the Samsung Galaxy Tab event.
For those of you who are wondering, Air is basically Adobe’s way of letting you run a Flash application outside the web browser.
Why would you want to do this? I don’t want to say it, but I’m going to have to: Farmville. With very little work, Farmville (or Petville, Mafiaville, InsertYourTimeWastingThingHereVille and other Flash-based games) could be ported to run in an Adobe Air container and loaded up in your app drawer ready to run without launching your browser and navigating to the game’s URL (or web address). This also means that developers who are familiar with writing code for Flash can now relatively easily write code for Air, and have that code run on any device that can run the Air software — not just Android.
This gives Android a huge competitive advantage over Apple who has sworn off not only Flash and Air, but also any app developed using a third-party development tool (the later of which they’re in the process of allowing to avoid problems with the U.S. FTC).
We don’t have any more details at this time, but we assume that “the coming weeks” means we’ll see Air on Android devices before the end of 2010. And, like Flash, we suspect Air will require Android 2.2 Froyo (or greater) to be able to run.
