PreFox Brings Mozilla Fennec to Palm Pre, Pre Plus
In a very admirable display of application porting, coder “Mossop” of site Fractal Brew has recompiled Mozilla’s Fennec — the mobile version of Firefox — into a build compatible with the Palm Pre. PreFox, as its known, cannot technically be said to support all webOS devices, as it has never been tested on Pixi models. Despite a number of bugs and stability issues, the browser is said to offer several advantages over Palm’s native client, including better support for web standards, multiple tab restore, improved cookie and password management, and synchronization with desktop Firefox apps — not to mention the Awesomebar and plug-in support that really set Fennec apart.
Right now the build is said to suffer from slow startup, high memory usage, app slowdown, and missing UI and webOS-specific functionality tweaks; unfortunately, Mossop claims that he’s hit a wall in addressing most of these issues, and is calling on the webOS development community to continue refining the project, if there’s interest. What we’re most interested in is seeing how PreFox performs on a super-charged Pre Plus packing a 1GHz overclocked kernel. Anyone care to test it out and report back? Note: PreFox requires webOS 1.4.5 to operate.
