Nokia Swipe: NFC Payments Plus Receipts and Reminders?

A video has surfaced online describing a service called Nokia Swipe, which would use near field communication technology for both payment and transaction confirmation, as well as allowing the handset to deliver reminders about a product’s return policy. Nokia is apparently touting the environmental benefits of this system, as copies of receipts are retained in the phone instead of printed out. What’s more, Swipe allows consumers to receive offers from stores based on their purchases there, and return items by simply swiping their phones.

With Nokia World forthcoming, and the company itself already committed to outfitting its entire smartphone lineup with NFC chips next year, we’d be pretty surprised if this program doesn’t turn out to be legitimate. Europe will see the most benefits from Nokia’s NFC-enabled fleet, but the US is also in the midst of carrier-backed trials of this contactless payment technology, along with several other iterations. It seems pretty clear that payment-by-swipe is the wave of the future: the only question is, who is in the best position to deliver a unified standard?
