LG Confirms Dual-Core Android Smartphones

It looks like LG has teamed up with graphics processor maker NVIDIA to deliver dual-core, gaming centric Android handsets to its Optimus lineup of devices, which will include smartphones and tablets. New smartphones running the dual-core processors are expected to arrive this fourth quarter.

According to LG, which has announced via a press release, the NVIDIA Tegra 2 AP20 chipset will give the necessary power to give its Optimus smartphones a boost, including dual-core CPU with 1 GHz per core, highly energy efficient GeForce-based graphics processor, 1080p HD video processor.

In consumer terms, LG expects that these technological improvements will yield up to 2X faster web browsing and 5X better gaming performance over similarly clocked single core CPUs.

Though the manufacturer hasn’t announced what carriers or models will get the dual-core NVIDIA-powered Optimus smartphones running Android OS, some possible candidates include T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless. A leaked T-Mobile roadmap had indicated two possible LG models coming and Verizon is the only carrier to offer the LG Ally; Verizon is also expected to bring the power of Android OS to the LG enV Touch 2.
