Twitter Confirms Push Notifications for Official iPhone Client

Thanks to a small set of users who were accidentally able to preview the feature early, Twitter has been forced to confirm that push notifications will soon be coming to its official Twitter for iPhone client. In response to a query from MobileCrunch, Twitter representatives said that “we’ve been testing push notifications internally…push isn’t ready yet, but we look forward to rolling this out soon.”

Of course push notifications are already available from certain third-party iPhone Twitter clients, such as Boxcar, but adding this capability to the official application will likely drive even more traffic to the micro-blogging site. At the time of this writing it was unclear exactly which type of messages will be pushed, but we assume that some level of filtering must be involved, because users following many accounts would quickly get swamped by the full stream.
