Galaxy Tab: Samsung’s 7-Inch Phone Announced at IFA

While Samsung may be doing its best to promote the Galaxy Tab as the bigger brother, tablet edition to Galaxy S smartphone, the Android 2.2 Froyo tablet also does have phone features. IntoMobile’s Will Park was on-site at IFA to preview the device, and we’re not sure the average user would be comfortable enough to put a 7-inch slab to their face to make a phone call, but alas the feature is there in case you need it.

The device has a black front and white back and uses the same 1 Ghz Hummingbird processor that’s capable of decoding 1080p video. A massive 4000 mAh battery, 1024×600 WSVGA, WiFi, Bluetooth, rear camera with flash, and TouchWiz round out the specs. The device does have phone functionality as well as a dialer, unlike the iPad, as well as 3G mobile broadband data support, and would most likely be tied to a carrier when launched. Unlike Mr. Parks and his playful demo at IFA, we’d advise using a Bluetooth headset to speak on the phone, however.

Despite its large size, the 7-inch tablet looks to be fairly portable if you have large pockets in cargo pants or in a jacket. Will Parks was able to grip the device with one hand. It looks like Dell had really set the precedents for blurring the line between tablet and phone with its 5-inch Streak release.

Samsung had developed a customized email and calendar app to take advantage of the WSVGA touchscreen, though the company, along with Google–maker of Android, still needs to convince the development community that apps are needed for larger, higher resolution tablets.
