Nokia Confirms Key MeeGo Lifecycle Milestones

A Nokia marketing manager has confirmed several important milestones in the lifecycles of MeeGo versions 1.1 and 1.2. Helsinki-based Open Source Marketing Manager Quim Gil recently pointed out the Release Engineeing section of the MeeGo wiki, which contains the exciting news that 1.1 will be released to manufacturers as early as next month, with a web release (and presumably some device launches) occurring sometime between October 21st and 27th.

MeeGo 1.2 is slated for general release almost exactly six months later, near the end of April. The implications for these releases are fairly significant, as both Nokia and Intel have invested heavily in the open-source platform, a merging of the Moblin and Maemo operating systems that the companies hope will see widespread adoption the likes of which Android is enjoying — on devices as diverse as smartphones, netbooks, set-top boxes, and vehicle infotainment systems.
