Super-regional carrier U.S. Cellular has made good on its promise of an August release of the Android 2.1-powered HTC Desire — its second Android offering, after the Samsung Acclaim — at least to the lucky consumers in its 26-state footprint.

Although we initially thought that this 1GHz handset with 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display would hit fellow CDMA carrier Verizon first, it is U.S. Cellular, based out of Chicago, which has the distinction of bringing Desire stateside.

Of course, folks who absolutely couldn’t wait for this device have already imported it in an AT&T 3G-compatible variety for the princely sum of $770, so the $200 U.S. Cellular is asking (on contract, after mail-in rebate) should make it a lot more accessible.
