Popular iPhone game studio OpenFeint is bridging the iPhone-Android gap by bringing cross-platform social gaming compatibility. iPhone and Android friends and connected gamers can now use their respective platforms to play against each other once they receive an SMS or email game invite from a friend in their address book. The studio has offered a number of titles on the iOS platform and the latest move to bring cross-platform social gaming is a result of OpenFeint’s push into bringing some of its popular titles to Android Market, the official Android applications storefront.

According to OpenFeint, “OpenFeint is bridging the gap between gamers…we’re going to roll out services that will help friends that use different device platforms play against each other.”

As the Android platform grows and rivals the scope and magnitude of Apple’s iPhone and iOS platform, we will begin to see more cross-platform social gaming as a result. Google’s Android platform, which is available on a plethora of carriers and manufactured by a diverse number of manufacturers and comes with a growing library of apps inside Android Market, is poised to be a serious contender in the smartphone space. Hopefully, developers will support more cross-platform efforts beyond iOS and Android to give other platforms a chance to compete against Apple and Google, such as HP webOS from Palm, Samsung’s Bada OS, and Windows Phone 7.
