HP: Windows 7 Tablet in Coming Weeks, PalmPad in Early 2011

On its most recent earnings call, HP has cited the growth of the tablet market as a reason why its consumer sales has been relatively stagnant, and the company intends to do something about that. Mainly it will be releasing a slate tablet based on Microsoft’s desktop Windows operating system in the coming weeks, and is promising a webOS tablet in early 2011. HP had purchased Palm to help it compete more effectively in the tablet space and the rumored PalmPad may hit consumer hands by early next year.

With Apple dominating tablet sales with its iPad, running a scalable version of the iOS operating system that’s based on the version used for the smaller iPhone smartphone, but could scale up and offer a more robust, finger-friendly user interface to leverage a tablet’s larger screeen, and Android 3.0 Gingerbread rumored to be more tablet-centric, it will be interesting to see how webOS scales and if a tablet version of webOS will leverage the larger screen in a compelling way for the UI as to not be just another blown up version of the Palm Pre. The initial criticism with the iPad before Apple had launched its tablet was that the device may be just another larger iPod Touch, but Apple had made smart UI tweaks for the tablet version of iOS to leverage the larger screen in a useful way.

HP had shown off its Windows 7 tablet by way of Steve Ballmer’s keynote at CES, but since the iPad debuted, the company has remained quiet about its choice of Microsoft’s OS on a tablet. Since CES, there were rampant rumors and speculations that the Windows 7 HP Slate was cancelled, but based on recent remarks from HP, that doesn’t seem to be the case. It’d be interesting also to see how HP differentiates its Windows 7 Slate apart from the webOS and how the company targets and markets those products to avoid confusion among potential buyers who may not be as tech savvy to understand the different utility that each OS offers, the pros and the cons.
