Verizon iPhone Now in Verification Testing

John Gruber of Daring Fireball is further fueling the fire for Apple’s popular smartphone to make its way from GSM carrier AT&T to CDMA rival Verizon Wireless, currently the nation’s largest wireless carrier. According to Gruber, the rumors of a Verizon iPhone is more than just a rumor, as the CDMA phone, given the moniker N92, is now in engineering verification testing (EVT), an early stage prototype testing to identify any potential problems.

Gruber is strongly confident that a CDMA-based iPhone will be coming to the market, though it may not come to Verizon Wireless. The United States’ other major CDMA carrier would be Sprint, along with some other regional carriers.

Thus far, AT&T has been the exclusive iPhone carrier partner in the US, and Apple will need to venture out to other carriers to further saturate the US market with iPhones.

Rumors have been circulating that the iPhone for Verizon would hit sometime in early 2011.

For now, all of this should be filed under rumors, and we probably won’t know until Steve Jobs et al. announces something; if and when that does happen is anyone’s guess.
