Palm’s Detachable Cell Phone May Make Larger Tablets Chic
If you’re holding out on larger smartphones and tablets, like the Dell Streak for fear of its huge size, then Palm’s patent application will help to bring larger tablet-sized screens to the market and not punish users who need phone functionality with unwieldy display sizes. Palm’s idea is to have most of the processing and horsepower attached to the main tablet-based body. A phone attachment would fit right into the body and users can remove the phone portion when a call comes in, so that they don’t have to hold a 10-inch screen up to their heads a la iPad. The phone and the tablet would be connected via Bluetooth technology.
The patent is an interesting reversal of what Palm had intended for the Foleo, which is basically a dumb netbook where all the processing power and brains remain in the smartphone; the Foleo would essentially be just a keyboard and monitor packed into a netbook size. Here, the power is in the larger-screened device and the phone would be the dumb pipe.
While this is just a patent right now and doesn’t imply that this device will ever hit the market, but it does give us hope that HP and Palm would bring something unique, fresh, and innovative.
