Canadians Get Option for Pricey, Unlocked iPhone 4
With the iPhone 4 headed to more countries this Friday–and Canada is among those 17 nations–Canadians will also have the option to purchase their iPhone 4 unlocked for a handsome price. Unfortunately, though, unlocked iPhone 4s are not part of Apple’s US plans despite the new DMCA laws regarding unlocking. For our neighbors up north, the top of the line 32 GB iPhone 4 will retail for $779 in Canadian currency (or about $750 US). Similarly, the 16 GB variant will go for $659 and the 8 GB 3GS will retail for $549 without any commitments to any carriers or plans.
In the US, if you buy an iPhone, you’d be assessed either an $18 upgrade fee or $36 new activation fee. For our calculation, we’ll use the new activation fee of $36. In addition to the $300 retail price of the 32 GB iPhone 4 on contract and an early cancellation fee of $325 from AT&T if you decide to cancel right away, you’re paying $661 plus taxes on your iPhone compared to the $750 US equivalent of the Canadian unlocked–about a $90 difference–contract-free model. Of course, in the US, you’ll still need to find a means to unlock your phone, which is now legal.
