Intel wants in on some of the Google action that’s been going on, with device manufacturers utilizing various editions of ARM processors, most notably HTC with their deployment of Qualcomm-based smartphones and Motorola’s commitment to TI’s OMAP ARM-based Android devices. To accomplish its end, chipmaker Intel is working on porting Android to be compatible with the x86 chip architecture to reduce the time and resources required of device makers should they want to use an Intel Atom chipset in their Android smartphone or tablet. Intel will be making their efforts open-source, after all the chipmaker is in it to sell chips and not various builds of Android. Android 2.2 for x86 chips will be available sometime this summer.
