Video Samples: iPhone 4 720p HD Video Recording

The iPhone 4 is one of the few smartphones that can record video at full 720p, and most likely the only smartphone that can do so at a full 30fps (out of the box). Here’s a look at two samples we shot with the iPhone 4’s camera, one taken indoors, and one taken outdoors.

As you can see in the indoor sample, the iPhone 4 does a very good job in low light situations. If conditions become too dim, you can turn on the LED flash, which isn’t perfect and often either provides too much light in close-up situations, or not enough light when you’re standing several feet from the subject. The audio component of the video was crisp.

Here’s the outdoor sample. While it’s generally crisp and clear, the colors are a bit dull. The blue sky seems tinted gray, and the bright green grass doesn’t come through as such in the video.

Overall, the clarity of the 720p video on the iPhone 4 is outstanding, but the color reproduction isn’t great. It’s definitely an improvement over the previous generation iPhone, but in my opinion, other devices like the EVO 4G, Nexus One, and Samsung Omnia II do a better job with the color reproduction, which is very important.
