Walt Mossberg’s iPhone 4 Review: Great Phone, AT&T Still the Black Sheep
Despite his harsh words on the HTC HD2, Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal and All Things D came away from his iPhone 4 with a positive outlook and a glowing recommendation of Cupertino’s smartphone, due to arrive in retail stores on June 24th.
Titled “New iPhone Keeps Apple Top of Class,” Mossberg’s review praises Apple’s re-tooled industrial design for its strengthened glass front and back panel as well as the durable steel body, the retina display technology for short images and crisp text, great camera, and FaceTime video chat.
According to Mossberg, the biggest downside to the iPhone 4 was Apple’s carrier partner in the US: AT&T. Mossberg goes on to say, “Just as with its predecessors, I can’t recommend this new iPhone for voice calling for people who experience poor AT&T reception, unless they are willing to carry a second phone on a network that works better for them.”
Despite his reservations with AT&T’s network, the review ends on a positive note for Apple’s fourth generation smartphone: “For everyone else, however, I’d say that Apple has built a beautiful smartphone that works well, adds impressive new features and is still, overall, the best device in its class.”
