HTC Leap Feature for Sense 2.5 on Windows Phone (sort of)

If you’ve been watching our Android videos lately, then you’re probably familiar with a feature called “Leap” on HTC devices running the latest version of the Sense UI. It gives an overview of all the home screens and allows users to easily switch between them. The feature can be activated by using a pinch gesture or pressing the home hardware key (2x if not on main screen). This makes it super convenient to navigate the interface, especially from one end to the other.

Sense 2.5 for Windows Mobile uses a different approach to achieve a similar function. A slider at the bottom makes it easy to zip through all the different tabs of the interface. One user on XDA-developers, however, preferred the Leap-like method found on Android, so he decided to make a simple program to recreate the feature for his Windows phone and Sense 2.5.

After installing Manila 2.5 HomeScreenJump from XDA, a shortcut will be placed in the Start menu. Then you can assign it to a hardware key for quick access. Launching it will pull up a screen showing 7 images and tapping on them will take you to their respective tabs. Unfortunately, only these tabs are supported at the moment: Home, People, Messages, Mail, Weather, Twitter and Programs. These previews don’t reflect what’s actually on your tabs as they’re just predefined static images. Not all ROMs, custom or stock, have the Programs tab, so that one will be useless for some users.

HomeScreenJump doesn’t have the fancy animations and it’s limited in its current state, but it’s a good start. Hopefully we’ll see some customization options in the future. I’d like to see a 3×3 grid (Sense 2.5 has many tabs) with the ability to add/remove/rearrange the tab images and their functions.

Notes: this simple app was created for the HTC Touch Pro2. I tested it on a TP2 and also an HTC Pure. It should work on other WVGA HTC devices running Sense 2.5 too. Please note that unless you have a GSM TP2, only install the first CAB (HomeScreenJump) on XDA. The “RhodiumkbdControl” download is not compatible with other devices.
