The latest study by NPD now pegs Android as the number two mobile OS in the US for the first quarter of the year for devices sold, behind RIM and beating out Apple’s iPhone OS by a respectable margin. Data from the study is collected from over 150,000 online consumer surveys per month and shows that Google’s Android operating system collected 28% of the vote, behind RIM’s 36% BlackBerry market share and ahead of Apple’s 21% iPhone market share. While the iPhone OS represents a few devices of two color options and 3 different storage capacities all in the same form factor by one manufacturer, Apple, Android has the benefit of a plethora of devices of varying form factors and sizes from a multitude of manufacturers.
