iPhone for Verizon–Wishful Thinking or Hopeful Reality?
Talks about the iPhone’s future on Verizon Wireless has thus far come up short as Apple and AT&T are still tied together for Apple wireless products, which now includes all generations of the iPhone to date and the iPad with 3G capabilities. However, the latest round of rumors for Apple’s coveted smartphone to appear on the nation’s largest wireless carrier is proving to be interesting, and if true, Verizon Wireless can bear merit to carrying the first 4G iPhone in the US–not the iPhone 4G but one that works on the next-generation 4G wireless network for faster data downloads.
Insiders, meaning loud-mouthed Verizon employees and the usual “people familiar to the matter” are now reporting that Verizon’s iPhone can emerge as soon as Summer 2011 with the launch of the carrier’s LTE network for 4G wireless. Then again, we were tipped that the iPad would be launched on Verizon Wireless before by “people familiar” with the situation, so all this must be taken with the regular tech skepticism. For now, we won’t know for sure until Steve Jobs and team makes it on stage and announces a 4G iPhone for Verizon’s LTE network.
There’s also speculation that Apple’s exclusivity with AT&T is expiring soon and that AT&T was coerced into offering cheap $30 per month unlimited iPad data without any long-term contracts to extend its iPhone exclusivity for another six months, possibly taking the carrier through the end of this year.
We’ll have to see how everything works out, and this will be filed under the rumors section until we see a launch or announcement. For those interested in the iPhone for Verizon–is this getting your hopes up or are you dismissive of the rumors until you see the actual product?
