Too Much Desire for the Desire? Consumers Outraged With HTC for Colluding with Carriers
It looks like HTC has re-allocated its inventory of the HTC Desire, the HTC Sense version of the Nexus One, giving inventory preference to carriers. Essentially, what this means is that HTC is delaying the SIM-unlocked version of the HTC Desire and instead giving its early inventory to carriers to brand and offer the phones through carrier subsidized retail channels. Online retailers like Clove UK are saying that they should see shipments of the SIM-unlocked Android handsets arrive by next week, hopefully, for those who don’t want to deal with the carriers. According to an HTC email that was posted online, the company’s customer service rep is stating:
I am very sorry for this situation, I understand you have spoken to one of my colleagues today in regards to this issue, I understand the most likely reason for any delays to HTC official Online partners may be a logistical problem, with Network providers being preferred over the Online Partners, please accept my apologies for the delay in replying to you regarding this.
We are finding it very hard to substantiate such a delay without any valid reasons and can completely understand what you mean here, we will put any info we have on the site immediately but whilst we too are in the dark we can only apologise and ask for your patience.
It seems that some users over at XDA-Developers are finding the situation a bit misleading and are not pleased with HTC placing carriers first over customers. For its part, HTC has traditionally placed its devices in the hands of carriers and resellers and has only begun in recent years to market itself as a consumer brand to raise awareness of the HTC moniker. Also, while end users may purchase just one device–maybe two–at a time, carriers order more devices which may be the deciding factor with HTC UK giving preference to carrier orders.
It looks like there may be just a little too much desire for the Desire.
