MIX10: Two Ways to Purchase Apps, Games, Music, and Videos on Windows Phone 7 Series

Marketplace for Mobile was initially introduced for Windows Mobile 6.x devices with the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5, and since then, Microsoft has allowed consumers to purchase apps and games via the web browser on the desktop or on device. With Windows Phone 7 Series, things are going to change a bit. Still present is the convenience of on-device app purchase through Marketplace for Windows phone 7 Series on the device, but desktop apps, games, music, and videos will be handled by the Zune Dorado client.

We asked Microsoft during our personal time with the company’s representatives about the web method for purchasing apps through the browser for Windows Phone 7 Series, and the company says it is examining different options, but for now Microsoft is focused on the Dorado client and the on-device method for purchasing apps.

Moreover, the company is also removing geographic restrictions for apps so now we’ll see a larger worldwide catalog of applications rather than smaller country-specific app catalogs.

Also, similar to Windows Mobile 6.5’s Marketplace for Mobile, the new Marketplace for Windows Phone 7 Series can be customized for carriers. Microsoft will allow carriers to have their own storefronts within the Marketplace app. Details aren’t given for the carrier’s sub-store for Windows Phone 7 Series, but we do know that Marketplace for Mobile for 6.5 took all the negotiation work out of the equation for developers. If developer’s apps were negotiated to appear in the carrier’s branded store, Microsoft would still give developers 70% of the revenues (no different than if the app was sold through regular Marketplace for Mobile) and Microsoft would work out all the credit card and carrier agreements. With Windows Phone 7 Series, this would be important since as far as we know, the Marketplace will be the only place to obtain apps–third party stores like Handango would not be compatible with Windows Phone 7 Series.
