GDC: 3D Games on Windows Phone 7 Series, Part 1 of 2
In the last video series, we’ve explored Xbox LIVE services on Windows Phone 7 Series, and we’re kicking off the next Microsoft talk: “High Performance 3D Games on Windows Phone 7 Series Using XNA Game Studio 4.0.” Although Microsoft will implement two screen sizes for Windows Phone 7 Series, developers can code their apps and games using XNA Studio 4.0 to scale appropriately–code for the game and let XNA Studio do the rest.
The take away of the session is that although high resolution graphics, which is something that is very capable in Windows Phone 7 Series, is awesome, utilizing that feature may degrade frame rates in game play. Developers will have to balance between frame rates and graphics performance, making some trade offs as needed.
For developers, coding for Windows Phone 7 Series will be simpler–there are only two screen resolutions, a standard amount of RAM across the platform, and the same CPU and GPU support.
In the second 3D Games on Windows Phone Series video, we’ll explore more about the effects and GPU.
