Android Archos Tablet Phone Looking Like Vaporware
Archos had launched a successful–and attractive multimedia line of Internet tablets last year based on the Android OS that started with the Archos 5–and the company had mentioned that a 4.3-inch Archos Tablet Phone that resembles the Archos 5 may be forthcoming, pending carrier negotiations. At the time, Archos said that it needed two senior carriers to be on board with the project; unfortunately, that may not be happening and the Tablet Phone may never see the light of day.
The 4.3-inch screen of the Tablet Phone puts the device in the same camp as the Windows Mobile-based HTC HD2 with a screen size that sits between the Dell Mini 3 and Dell Mini 5, both of which run Android OS as well. The Archos model will be a high-end performance model with 3G, a high resolution FWVGA display, and a 1 GHz processor at its core. If it carries the same Archos customizations as the Archos 5, the Tablet Phone should play a vast plethora of video and audio formats, making it a very capable multimedia machine.
With a proposed launch date of the first quarter of this year, and a no show at CES and Mobile World Congress, IntoMobile is speculating that the carrier support was never achieved and the device may be shelved.
