Touch Pro2: The Straight Talk About Straight Talk

When HTC announced the Touch Pro2 at Mobile World Congress 2009, they also unveiled the Straight Talk conferencing calling feature, which activates speakerphone when you flip the device over so that the screen is facing down. The Touch Pro2 has dual speakers and dual microphones to make that happen, delivering loud, crisp voice conversations as your mobile speakerphone unit. So how does it measure up?

Well, after Brandon has reviewed the HTC Touch Pro2 in its unbranded iteration, Adam with the T-Mobile version, and Daniel Webster with the Sprint incarnation, I must say that the speakerphone capabilities are fantastic. In using Sprint’s Now Network, I found calls to be clear and loud, and my callers note that they couldn’t even tell I was on a speakerphone. In my testing, callers note that the speakerphone was actually better than the phone calling experience; in some calls using the regular headset, callers noted a slight hissing noise in the background but that hiss disappeared in speakerphone.

How well did Straight Talk work? In comparing it with the iPhone, which sounded like I was going through a tunnel, and the BlackBerry Tour speakerphone, which is good but sounded a bit hollow at times, my callers found that the Touch Pro2 could replace conference room speakers while on the go. If you’re sitting closely at a table and there are only a few people, the Touch Pro2’s Straight Talk will deliver straight talking conversations so you can close business deals. However, if you’re at a larger table, the volume could use an extra boost. Even so, at its loudest setting, the speakers did not distort and managed to impress quite a few people, many of whom were shocked to know they were caught saying something incriminating on speakerphone.

The moral of the story is that if you’re on the fence about upgrading and use the speakerphone a lot, you should take the plunge if costs aren’t too big of an issue in this economy. The second moral is that callers should watch what they say as they can be caught with some discriminating leak on speakerphone.
