Obituary: RIP QVGA Screen Resolution

In our editorial obituary of VGA displays, we’ve examined some screen resolutions. One resolution, QVGA, which has been a staple for Windows Mobile for a very long time now, is still kicking. However, it may not be for much longer as Microsoft’s Loke Uei has told developers for the mobile OS platform to stop developing for that resolution. Moving forward, it seems that VGA and the growing popularity of WVGA formats may be the way to go. Even with VGA, it seems that HTC is slowly abandoning that format to go with the wider screen version of WVGA.

Let’s take a moment to mourn the slow death of QVGA. Ok, we’re done. We can’t say we’re really sad to see the now low-resolution QVGA sink into oblivion. While Microsoft may not support that resolution on Windows Mobile Professional moving forward, the resolution is still popular among feature phones and dumbphones.
