Flix, Global Movie Listings App for Windows Mobile

If you’re a movie buff and own a Windows Mobile device, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of Cinemo. For those who haven’t heard of it, Cinemo is a great app to check movie show times. It does what it’s supposed to do and does it well. However, it has two obvious flaws. It only allows you to look up listings for the current day and it only works for theaters located in the U.S. & Canada. Luckily, another developer has been working on his own version of Cinemo, called Flix, and it’s just been updated to support 7 different countries. Read on to see if your turf is supported and to learn what else Flix has to offer.

Flix gives us the current day’s show times, but it also delivers on features that you normally wouldn’t find using similar apps. For example, if you and your friends are trying to figure out what time to see a movie that comes out 3 days from today, you’re probably going to have to resort to using your mobile web browser because other apps only display info for the present day. Flix, on the other hand, would be ideal to use in that situation because it lets you check movie listings, cast info and summaries for the entire week (sometimes more).

Another neat feature is that it stores the listings. So once you update movie info for the week, you won’t need to use a data connection to view the info until the following week. This convenience comes at a price, it takes a couple minutes to update listings for your favorite theaters. I’m sure most of you can find 2-3 minutes of free time a week to download 7-10 days worth of movie info to have at your discretion, right? Other notable features are listed below.

Key Features:

– Supports North America, UK, France, Germany, Spain, & Italy (possibly Ireland)

– Yahoo based

– Search based on Postal code or town

– GPS “Where am I” lookup

– Google Maps link from Cinema Info screen

– Call cinema directly from the app

– Lists times, cast info, Synopsis, runtime, and (optionally) a poster if Yahoo has one

– Download multiple locations

– Schedule updates with commandline switch

– Ignore cinemas you don’t visit

Flix is available from XDA-developers. Future installments should have support for more countries like Australia and additional European countries. If your location is supported by Yahoo Movies, but not Flix, be sure to head over to XDA-developers and mention it. A new interface is also in the app’s future.

Note: initial download of listings will take a handful of minutes. After that, you can select which theaters to exclude in your search, which will shorten the time it takes to update.
