Toshiba Launching Snapdragon Phone, Taunts North America

A while ago Toshiba had exited the North American PDA market, but continue to evolve its PDA line to a smartphone line elsewhere in the civilized world. Now, it looks like the firm is bringing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip to a new WVGA Windows Mobile 6 Professional smartphone with 3G, touchscreen goodness, WiFi, GPS, and a new 3D user interface.

The video above shows the UI courtesy of SlashGear. The TG01 uses a screen that’s 8% larger than the venerable Touch HD and is 21% slimmer. According to the site, it seems that Toshiba is using some advanced screen technology: The screen also has many of Toshiba’s HDTV technologies, including color matching, dynamic gamma correction and LCD backlight control.

In the gaming department, here’s what SlashGear has to say:

On the positive side, while title developers – and Toshiba claim to be working with several to produce downloadable, internet-enabled games – will have to work to finesse the control interface, one thing they won’t need to worry about is performance. The video and gaming running on the demo TG01 handsets were both smooth, slick and high-resolution, even in the less than ideal lighting environment; we’d love to know if Toshiba plan a TV-out cable, as we’ve a feeling the TG01 would do a decent job hooked up to a full-size screen as a portable media player. Out of the box it supports DivX files, and of course thanks to full Flash support you can play online video too.
