More AT&T Samsung Mirage Speculations
Many people in the Windows Mobile community had initially thought that the Samsung Omnia will emerge on AT&T as the Samsung Mirage. However, Pocket PC Central is now speculating that the Samsung Mirage, a name found on AT&T’s product roadmap, may be a different device. The speculation is that the Mirage will actually launch on AT&T as the BlackJack III, which is essentially the i788, a rebadge of the i780, which has since been available in Europe.
The i780/i788 is a touchscreen candybar device with a front-facing QWERTY keyboard, which takes the Treo Pro form factor and has a 320 X 320 screen, optical mouse instead of directional pad, 3G/GSM, and GPS. The i780 was originally created for the European market because the device lacked the support for American 3G bands. The i788 is rumored to be the US variant of the i780, swapping European 3G with American 3G support.
Right now though, without more information, it is anybody’s guess whether the Mirage will be the Omnia or the BlackJack III. If it does come as the BlackJack III, it would be interesting to see why AT&T would drop the popular BlackJack branding for a new product that resembles others within the line. After all, if the Mirage is in fact the i788, it retains the slick BlackJack look, except it adds a touchscreen.
